The user interface is translated into several languages. A file map shows the overall file differences in a location pane. Side-by-side line difference and highlights differences inside lines. Word will convert the PDF file to an editable Word document so you can edit, copy, cut or format the text. You may get a prompt that says Word will now convert your PDF to an editable document. Regexp filtering for filenames and lines. Open a Word document, select File > Open, find the PDF file and select Open.

It is highly useful for determining what has changed between file versions, and then merging those changes. This functionality could be applied to all file types (it's already done for those specified as binary types) or only for a user-specified list of files types, whichever you think is best and will result in the most efficiency.

Only when actually necessary, will WinMerge then spend the time required to perform a more time-consuming comparison that involves searching for changes within the files. In the meantime, how about WinMerge perform a simple binary (or checksum) comparison before trying to perform a comparison that looks for changes within the files? That way, if the 2 (or 3) files are identical, the comparison will be lightning fast.

See this feature request for that functionality: #715 Ideally, WinMerge will be able to intelligently compare PDF documents (and other files that combine text strings and binary data). A perfect and common example of such files is a PDF document. Currently, I use WinMerge to compare files that contain some text strings as well as some binary data.
